Kaduna Govt Revives Criminal Case Against Former Wazirin Zazzau
The Kaduna State Government has revived the criminal case filed against the former Wazirin Zazzau, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad Aminu, after a long period without progress in the proceedings.
The state government had initially charged Alhaji Ibrahim Aminu with offences bordering on forgery, use of forged documents, and violation of the Official Secrets Act during the selection process of a new Emir of Zazzau following the death of the late Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, in 2020.
The matter was again mentioned before Chief Magistrate Court 1, Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Kaduna, for continuation of hearing.
Speaking with journalists after the court session, the State Counsel from the Kaduna State Ministry of Justice, SS Idris, explained that the case was revived following the appointment of a new magistrate to the court.
According to him, the change of magistrate caused the delay in the continuation of proceedings before the matter was re-listed for hearing.
SS Idris further stated that the state government filed the charges based on allegations surrounding the handling of certain documents and information related to the selection process of the new Emir of Zazzau.
The court adjourned further hearing in the case to June 16, 2026.
However, efforts to obtain comments from counsel to the defendant, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad Aminu, were unsuccessful, as he declined to comment on the matter.
In the “Application for Criminal Direct Complaint” earlier filed by the state government, the Registrar of the Chief Magistrate Court was requested to commence criminal proceedings against the 74-year-old kingmaker over allegations of releasing the outcome of the selection process to “unauthorized persons.”
The document stated:
“Please cause a criminal summons to be issued against the defendant, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad Aminu, for the offences of forgery of public seal, forgery, using forged documents as genuine, processing counterfeit seals with intent to commit forgery, and violation of the Official Secrets Act under Sections 346, 343, 347 and 348 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law 2017 as well as the Official Secrets Act.”
The application further alleged that the defendant, in his capacity as Wazirin Zazzau and Chairman of the Zazzau Kingmakers’ Committee, participated in the selection process of the new Emir of Zazzau held on September 24, 2020, and subsequently released information relating to the proceedings to unauthorized persons, contrary to the Official Secrets Act.
The state government also accused him of obtaining copies of letters addressed to the Commissioner for Local Government and certifying them as Certified True Copies (CTC) by affixing his signature, an act the government alleged amounted to forgery and falsification of public documents before handing them over to unauthorized persons.
